Hum II Honors
Extra Credit Writing Assignment

Value: 20 points

Watch It’s Me or the Dog on Animal Planet (it runs at 9 and 9:30am during the week) and note how Ivan Pavlov’s theories (stimulus and response) works through dogs. You might want to review his practices on the web before you watch.

See: http://www.muskingum.edu/~psych/psycweb/history/pavlov.htm

And: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhqumfpxuzI

Watch It’s Me or the Dog and take notes on how Victoria (the trainer) uses a clicker to encourage a positive response out of the dog. How do the dogs respond? How effective is the treatment? What early challenges does Victoria face? How does she overcome the dog’s stubbornness?

After taking notes, write a one-page, double-spaced analysis. One paragraph should evaluate what Victoria did to encourage behavior responses from the dogs and how effective her Pavlovian approach to training is. The second paragraph should discuss to what extent this method is successful with humans (you can refer to Brave New World if you like). Have you seen teachers or parents use Pavlovian methodologies? How do kids respond to this method? Do adults respond similarly? Differently?

You will be scored on how well you cite the show (use quotes where you can and specific references where you can’t quote) and analyze the effect of her training methods. Mere summaries of the show will earn at most 5 points.

Your analysis must be submitted to turnitin.com by 10:00PM on Saturday April 18th. Bring a printed copy on Monday when we return. If you do not meet all of the submission requirements, you will not earn any points.

This is a good way to raise your grade so take advantage of it!
